Bloomfield Track. Our next adventure was a 6-day cycle trip from Cape Tribulation to Cooktown following the Bloomfield Track, a coastal road built in 1984 under heavy protests by the greenies, because the road was meant to cross untouched rainforest. The track was built but the area was included in the world heritage list.

La pista Bloomfield. Nuestra siguiente aventura fue una excursión en bici de seis días desde Cape Tribulation a Cooktown siguiendo la pista Bloomfield, una carretera costera construida en 1984 bajo fuertes protestas de los grupos ecologistas, puesto que significaba cruzar selva forestal hasta entonces virgen. La carretera fue de todos modos construida pero el area se incluyó en la lista de los Patrimonios de la Humanidad.

Bloomfield Track After 30 km strenuous paddling through the rainforest we reached the historic town of Bloomfield . The one and only house which forms the town was painted by an artist of an aborigine community nearby.

Después de 30 extenuantes kilómetros de pedaleo a través de selva tropical llegamos al histórico pueblo de Bloomfield. La única casa que forma tal pueblo es esta, y está pintada por un artista de una comunidad aborigen cercana.

Bloomfield Track. One of the few signs of civilization along the track. This one is as well one of the oldest pubs of northern Queensland.

Uno de los pocos signos de civilización durante la pista. Este es además uno de los pubs más antiguos del norte de Queensland.

And of course as usual you can find lots of signs representing the special outback humour.

Cooktown. The end of civilization in the far north Queensland. From here on 1000 km of rainforest stretches till Cape York the most northern point of the continental Australia. This place is also famous because Captain Cook stayed there for 2 months repairing his ship, damaged in the Great Barrier Reef. And in the hill where this photo was taken the white people spotted the first kangaroos, deriving the word from the local aboriginal word “gungurra”.

Cooktown. El fin de la civilización en el lejano norte de Queesnland. Desde aquí, en mil kilómetros de selva tropical, se estira el Cabo York, el punto más al norte de la Australia continental. Este lugar es también famoso porque el Capitán Cook estuvo aquí dos meses reparando su barco, que se había dañado en la barrera de coral. En la colina donde se tomó esta foto vieron los blancos por primera vez canguros, llamándolos así por la palabra local “gungurra”.

In the historic cemetery Katja was taken by the way one family remembers their loved ones.

En el cementerio histórico a Katja le llamó la atención la manera en la que una familia recuerda a sus seres queridos.

Thousands of Chinese came to Cooktown when tin mines were opened at the end of the 19th century. As a reminder of their presence a shrine can still be found in the historic cemetery.

Miles de chinos vinieron a Cooktown cuando minas de lata(?) abrieron a finales del siglo XIX. Como recuerdo de su presencia, todavía se puede encontrar una estela funeraria en la parte del cementerio en la que eran enterrados.

One of the biggest problems of the aboriginal communities is alcohol. To fight against this social problem some communities have declared themselves “dry” and the possession of alcohol or bringing alcohol into it is heavily fined.

Uno de los problemas más grandes de las comunidades aborígenes es el alcohol. Para luchar contra ese problema social, algunas comunidades se han declarado así mismas “secas” y la posesión de alcohol, o el traer alcohol a las mismas está fuertemente sancionado.

Road building is not an Australian strength. They forgot to use the good old zigzag technique to negotiate the hills, what lead to pushing our bikes against 33% steep long and exhausting ascents. Worst than the Tour de France.

Construir carreteras no es uno de los puntos fuertes australianos, pues se les olvidó la siempre útil técnica del zig zag para remontar las montañas. Esto quiere decir que tuvimos que empujar nuestras bicis en tramos de hasta un 33% de inclinación en largos y extenuantes ascensos. Peor que el Tour de Francia.

Passing several rivers was quite scary because of the possible presence of crocs, but probably scarier than the crocs were the hundreds of 4WDs and motorbikes driving the track. Since Australia is the 4WD country, this dirt road was much busier than the inland bitumen road.

Cruzar los ríos daba bastante miedo por la posible presencia de cocodrilos, pero mucho más peligrosos que eso eran los cientos de todoterrenos y motos que circulaban por la pista. Australia es el país de los todoterrenos por excelencia y esta pista tenía mucho más tránsito que la carretera interior, que es asfaltada.

As mentioned before, the cassowaries are endangered. Since they do sometimes cross the roads, a lot of speed bumps have been erected to avoid accidental killings, which is sadly the most common cause of death of this beautiful bird. In this modified sign, a local artist expresses what can happen if you drive too fast.

Como ya comentamos, las casuarinas están en peligro de extinción y puesto que a veces cruzan las carreteras se han puesto muchos “guardias tumbados” (así los llamábamos de pequeños) para evitar muertes por accidente que es, desgraciadamente la causa más común de muerte de estas preciosas aves. En esta señal, modificada, un artista local expresa lo que puede pasar si conduces demasiado rápido.

Our next stop was inland, The Atherton Tops, beautiful and peaceful plains, the hinterland of Cairns.

Nuestra proxima parada fue hacia ell interior. La planicie de Atherton, bellos y tranquilos parajes a la espalda de Cairns.

Although most of the rainforest was chopped down by white fellows they saved some extraordinary strangler fig trees, like this one, called the Curtain Tree. These trees start their life as an innocent seed growing high up in a branch of another tree. Then their roots grow downwards surrounding the host tree till it is strangled and dies.

Aunque la mayoría del bosque tropical fue talado por los blancos, salvaron algunas extraordinarias “higueras estranguladoras”, como esta, llamada el Árbol Cortina. Este tipo de árboles empiezan su vida como una inocente semilla que crece en lo alto de la rama de otro árbol. Luego dejan caer sus raices desde lo alto rodeando al árbol receptor hasta que finalmente lo estrangulan y éste muere.

In the volcanic lakes of the region we refreshed ourselves and had the opportunity to observe some wildlife, like the charming platypuses and these amazing turtles, which can take oxygen from the water passing it through its bottom.

En los lagos volcánicos de la región aparte de refrescarnos tuvimos la oportunidad de observar algo de la fauna local, como el encantador ornitorrinco y estas increíbles tortugas, las cuales pueden tomar oxígeno del agua que pasa através de su trasero.

Hinchinbrook Island. Situated between Cairns and Townsville, just a couple of km off the coast, is still a hidden secret on the usually very busy East Coast. The still untouched island is on the World Heritage list and does only allow 40 walkers per day.

La isla Hinchinbrook, situada entre Cairns y Townsville, tan solo a unos cuantos kilómetros de la costa, es todavía una de las joyas escondidas de la siempre ruidosa Costa Este. La isla está intacta y también pertenece al Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Para preservarla, tan sólo se permiten 40 caminantes por día.

We were lucky to get a permit for the 40km walk that crosses the island from north to south taking from 3 to 6 days depending on your physical condition and on your mood to enjoy the extraordinary spots you’ll find. On the boat with us were around 9 people prepared to walk the track. One thing that caught our attention was their heavy backpacks with up to 25 kg. We had by far the lightest ones with food for 5 days, tent, sleeping bags and clothes without exceeding 10 kg. It doesn’t have to be mentioned that we were the dirtiest ones at the end of the track and, as we later learned, we did miss on important things people brought on their hike: beer in bottles, 5 Lt wine cask, heaps of toilet accessories, and clean clothes for every day).

Tuvimos la suerte de conseguir un permiso para recorrer la ruta de 40 km que cruza la isla de norte a sur, lo que lleva de 3 a 6 días según tu condición física y las ganas que tengas de disfrutar de las maravillas que encontrarás. En el bote que nos trajo éramos 9 los caminantes y una cosa que nos llamó la atención fueron sus pesadas mochilas, algunas de hasta 25 kilos. Nosotros teníamos de lejos las más ligeras, con comida para 5 días, la tienda, sacos de dormir y ropa, todo ello en menos de 10 kilos. No hace falta decir que al final del trayecto nosotros éramos los menos limpios y que, como luego aprendimos, no trajimos cosas muy importantes que otros sí trajeron, como botellas de cerveza, garrafas de 5 litros de vino, miles de utensilios de baño y ropa limpia para cada uno de los días.

The island itself is covered with high mountains, rainforest blended with different types of eucalyptus forests and beautiful beaches as well as waterfalls and extraordinary campsites (a bit scary though because saltwater crocs may inhabit the area).

Here are some impressions:

La isla está cubierta de altas montañas, selva tropical mezclada con diferentes bosques de eucaliptos y preciosas playas, así como cascadas y extraordinarias zonas de acampada (aunque siempre con un poco de temor por los cocodrilos que siempre pueden pasar a darse una vuelta).

Aqui van algunas impresiones:

We forgot that Australian bread is not good for hiking. Why? Because of the calories you might think. No! Because it gets mouldy easily. Fortunately the weather conditions were fabulous and we could dry and toast our bread. Two important reasons to do that: 1) We calculated exactly the amount of food we would need and that’s why we relied on our bread. 2) There are no trash bins on the island, so we had to carry it any way. Better in our bellies.

Se nos olvidó que el pan australiano no es bueno para ir de senderismo. Por qué? Por las calorías o algo así? No, porque se pone mohoso muy fácilmente. Menos mal que hacía muy buen tiempo y pudimos secar y tostar el pan. Dos razones para hacer esto: 1) Calculamos exactamente la cantidad de comida que necésitabamos así que el pan era parte vital. 2)No hay cubos de basura en la isla, así que te lo tienes que llevar de todas manera. Mejor en nuestros estómagos.

Not only humans are enjoying their dinner every night. Also other mammals like little rats are after the food. That’s why it is very important to hang at night your backpack on a line, out of the reach of uninvited guests.

No solo los humanos disfrutan de una buena cena cada noche. También otros mamíferos, como las ratillas que dejaron estas huellas, ndan tras comida. Por eso muy importante colgar por la noche la mochila en una cuerda, fuera del alcance de visitantes no invitados.

We have a new hot entry in our rip off list. The winner by far is the cost of the transport to and off the island. Going there takes you at least 1.5 hours, but coming back takes you only a 10 minutes trip in that mini boat and that smiling man charges you 50$ !! There is no competence and the alternative way would be swimming among crocs….. Any choice?

Tenemos una nueva entrada bomba en nuestra lista de clavadas. El ganador es, de lejos, el precio que tuvimos que pagar por ir y volver a la isla. Ir es caro, pero por lo menos te lleva una hora y media, con lo que disfrutas de un mini crucero, pero volver son sólo 10 minutos y ese señor de apariencia tan inofensiva te cobra 50$ (30 EUR)!! No hay competencia y la alternativa es nadar entre cocodrilos.... alguna otra elección?
