Nullarbor Plain

1. After Esperance we fastened our seatbelts before traveling west (2200 Km to Adelaide) through the Nullarbor Plain. First we had to head 200km North to the small mining town of Norseman. This small hamlet in the middle of nowhere had its beginnings when in the late XIX century a small piece of gold got stuck in the hoof of a horse called Norseman. Now the animal (there’s even a photo in the local museum!) is the symbol of the village.

Depues de Esperance nos abrochamos nuestros cinturones de seguridad antes de viajar rumbo al oeste (2200Km hasta Adelaide) cruzando la llanura del Nullarbor. Pero primero tuvimos que viajar 200 Km hacia el norte hasta el
pequeño pueblo minero de Norseman. La historia de este pueblecito en el medio de la nada empezó cuando al final del siglo XIX una pepita de oró se quedó atascada en la pezuña de un caballo llamado Norseman. Ahora el animal es el símbolo del pueblo (tienen incluso una foto en el museo local!).

2. And here we go, Nullarbor Plain! This mostly treeless flat land got nicknamed by the surveyor E.A. Delisser in his trip across the area in 1867. The name means “no trees” in Latin. The semi arid plain extends about 700km long and
   350km wide.

Llanura Nullarbor, allá que vamos! El nombre de esta planicie, sin árboles en su mayoria, quedó acuñado por el explorador E. A. Delisser en su viaje por la zona en 1867. El
nombre significa “sin árboles” en latín. La semiárida llanura tiene 700 Km de largo por 350 de ancho.

3. As is usual in the outback, you can expect to find everything crossing the road, especially at night.

Como siempre, en el outback puedes esperar encontrarte cualquier cosa cruzando la carretera, especialmente por las noches.

4. And who said that traveling across never-ending long stretchings is boring? Here we have another example of outback modern art.

Quién dijo que viajar por estas rectas interminables es abrrido? Aquí tenemos otro ejemplo de arte moderno el outback.

5. They don’t make so good kitchenware anymore! After 47 years of use, someone left this pan to greet the travelers.

Ya no hacen utensilios de cocina como los de antes! Tras 47 años de uso, alguien dejó esta cazo para que salude a los viajeros.

6. The plain ends in spectacular cliffs. By the way, it was so windy we didn’t dare to get closer to the edge.

La llanura finaliza en espectaculares acantilados. Por cierto, hacía tanto viento que no nos atrevimos a acercarnos más al borde.

7. This is real Australian history! According to the sign, this is the first cycle ridden by a helmeted rider (important detail, safety first!) to cross the Nullarbor in 1962. The guys in the
   roadhouse where this treasure can be found are so convinced about his priceless value that they have appended to the bike a 20 liter canister in order to collect hundreds of donations.
   

Esto sí que es historia australiana de la buena! Según este cartel, esta es la primera bicicleta en la que un ciclista con casco (atención al detalle, ¡lo primero es la seguridad!) cruzó el Nullarbor en 1962. Los chicos de la gasolinera están tan convencidos del valor de esta reliquia que han puesto al lado un bidón de 20 litros para recoger los cientos de donaciones que sin duda esta joya merece.

8. Hey people! Have you seen one of these great white sharks lately? Ah! for your information: last year there where
   just 61 attacks from sharks in the whole world and only 4 were mortal (one in Australia).
   Much more people get drown in Sydney’s beaches every year.

¡Hey gente! ¿Habéis visto alguno de estos tiburones blancos últimamente? (el cartel dice que si has visto algun gran tiburón blanco informes a las autoridades científicas). ¡Ah!, por cierto, el año pasado hubo tan sólo 61 ataques de tiburones en todo el mundo y sólo 4 fueron mortales (uno en Australia). Mucha más gente se ahoga cada año en las playas de Sydney.

9. Our trip ended 3 long days later in Adelaide where we
   visited our Brazilian friend Samadhi and had dinner near the see in the Restaurant Manolita.

Nuestro viaje acabó 3 largos días más tarde en Adelaide, donde visitamos a nuestra amiga brasileira Samadhi y cenamos cerca del mar en el Restaurante Manolita.
